1、 Stainless steel (main tool for hand root canal filing)

Medical austenitic stainless steel, containing chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, rust resistant, corrosion-resistant, and biocompatible.

Characteristics

• Strong rigidity, high hardness, sharp cutting, suitable for clearing and exploring straight root canals;

• Poor flexibility, it is easy to straighten the root canal when it is bent, forming steps, side penetration, and breakage;

• Low cost, mostly made into hand K files, H files, and marrow extraction needles, commonly used in clinical initial expansion pathways.

2、 Nickel titanium alloy (mainstream for machine root canal files, Nitinol)

Basic components

Standard ratio: Nickel 55% to 56%+Titanium 44% to 45%, atomic ratio close to 1:1.

Core unique performance

• Super elasticity: automatically rebounds after deformation, can fit naturally curved root canals, greatly reducing root canal displacement and steps;

• Shape memory effect;

• Its resistance to cyclic fatigue is far superior to stainless steel, and it is preferred for complex curved root canals and molars.

Improved heat treatment nickel titanium (modern high-end file)

By temperature controlled phase transformation, the metallographic structure (martensite/austenite ratio) can be altered to further enhance flexibility and fracture resistance

• CM wire (memory controlled alloy): mainly composed of soft martensite at body temperature, more flexible;

• Gold heat-treated file: improves fatigue resistance and fracture life;

• R-phase and EDM electrical discharge machining of nickel titanium: less surface defects and less prone to needle breakage.

In the early years, the first generation of root canal files used carbon steel (clock spring steel), which was prone to rusting and has now been completely phased out; At present, there are only two types of clinical products: stainless steel and nickel titanium.
