1、 Kilowatt level commercial air conditioning/heat pump (closest to industrialization)
(1)Hong Kong University of Science and Technology: Kilowatt level bullet cooled air conditioning (2025, Nature)
Core parameters: Total cooling power of 1284W (exceeding the kilowatt threshold), unit mass cooling power of 12.3W/g, operating frequency of 3.5Hz.
Technical architecture: 10 nickel titanium alloy units in series and fluid parallel; Each unit contains 4 thin-walled NiTi tubes; Use graphene nanofluid (2g/L) to enhance heat transfer.
Application scenarios: Home/commercial air conditioning, data center cooling.
Advantages: Zero refrigerant, quietness, and energy efficiency potential far exceeding traditional air conditioning (theoretical COP>20).
(2)Saarland University/ZeMA: Thermal Heating and Cooling Air Conditioning System (2024-2025)
Technical solution: Ultra thin nickel titanium strip/wire cyclic stretching/releasing, achieving dual modes of cooling and heating.
Performance: It can achieve room temperature regulation of 20 ℃, with no pump, no valve, and low vibration in the system.
Positioning: Green air conditioning technology supported by the European Union, ranked as one of the top ten emerging technologies of 2024 by the World Economic Forum.

2、 Low temperature freezing/cold chain (key breakthrough to zero temperature)
(1)Hong Kong University of Science and Technology: The world's first sub zero bomb thermal refrigeration device (2026, Nature)
Core breakthrough: The temperature at the refrigeration end has dropped to -12 ℃, achieving for the first time stable thermoelastic cooling below zero degrees.
Materials and Design:
High nickel NiTi (51.2 at%), Af=-20.8 ℃, adiabatic peak temperature variation 16.3 ℃.
8 cascaded tubular units with a specific surface area of 8.68 mm ⁻¹, capable of withstanding a compressive stress of 900 MPa.
30% calcium chloride aqueous solution (antifreeze fluid) to avoid low-temperature blockage.
Applications: Medical cold chain (vaccines/biological samples), food freezing, low-temperature laboratory.
(2)Xi'an Jiaotong University: Thermal Refrigeration Refrigerator (2025)
Innovation point: Single motor drive (tilted placement), while achieving NiTi wire stretching and heat exchange switching, increasing compactness by 26%.
Parameters: Cooling temperature difference of 9.2 ℃, maximum cooling power of 3.1W; using 0.7mm nickel titanium wire, strain of 4.8% (considering lifespan).
Scenario: Home small refrigerator, car refrigeration, outdoor portable refrigeration.
3、 Laboratory Prototype and Basic Verification (Technical Foundation)
(1)University of Maryland: 200W Thermal Refrigeration Prototype (2023-2024)
Features: No pump or valve, pure mechanical drive, silent operation; The COP laboratory value can reach 20+.
Positioning: To verify the high energy efficiency and refrigerant free feasibility of bomb thermal refrigeration, and provide a technical foundation for small household appliances.
(2)NASA/Oak Ridge in the United States: Elastic Thermal Microfluidic Composite Heat Dissipation (2024-2025)
Application: Aerospace electronics, high-power chip heat dissipation.
Solution: Integration of NiTi thermal fins and microchannels, with a heat flux density of up to 500 W/cm ², achieving pump free, passive and efficient heat dissipation.
4、 Progress and Challenges in Industrialization
Progress: Kilowatt level and sub zero technologies have been validated and are expected to enter commercial trials from 2027 to 2030.
