Nickel titanium alloy is a metal alloy with atomic ratios close to nickel and titanium, and is divided into two core properties: hyperelasticity (pseudo elasticity) and shape memory. It is widely used in medical interventions, sensors, and intelligent structures.
1、 Core mechanical properties
(1)Shape Memory Effect (SME)
Deformation at low temperature, automatically returns to its original shape after heating to the phase transition temperature (Af).
-Pre set pipe shaping form (bent pipe, irregular contour);
-Commonly used for thrombectomy stents, occluders, and self expanding medical devices.
Tip: Ordinary stainless steel and titanium alloy do not have memory function.
(2) Super elasticity (pseudo elasticity SE, most commonly used at room temperature)
Within the room temperature range, stress can cause significant reversible deformation (up to 8% deformation rebound), which immediately rebounds and recovers after unloading without the need for heating.
-The elastic deformation limit of stainless steel is generally less than 0.5%, with a significant difference;
-Suitable for catheter sheaths, guidewire outer tubes, and elastic support sleeves;
-Good flexibility, not easily permanently bent after repeated bending.
(3)Flexibility and resistance to torsion and bending fatigue
Nickel titanium pipes are resistant to millions of cycles of bending fatigue and are not easily broken after repeated bending;
Thin walled micro nickel titanium capillaries can smoothly pass through curved blood vessel channels in the human body, making them the preferred material for interventional instruments.

2、 Phase transition and temperature characteristics
(1)There are four characteristic phase transition temperatures: Ms, Mf, As, Af
(2)By adjusting the nickel content and heat treatment process, the phase transition temperature can be customized (adjustable within the range of -20 ℃ to 60 ℃)
(3)Temperature changes directly alter the hardness and rigidity of the pipe material: it becomes soft at low temperatures and hardens/recovers its shape at Af temperature
3、 Corrosion resistance and biological performance (medical key)
(1)Excellent corrosion resistance
Resistant to human body fluids, saltwater, and weak acid corrosion, superior to 304 stainless steel;
(2)Biocompatibility
Qualified medical grade nickel titanium pipes meet ISO 10993 standards and are not prone to severe inflammation when implanted into the body;
Attention: Surface treatment (electrolytic polishing, oxide layer) will further reduce nickel ion precipitation.
4、 Other important physical characteristics
(1)Low magnetism
Non ferromagnetic material, compatible with MRI examination, without displacement or heating; Stainless steel has magnetism, which limits many intervention scenarios.
(2) Density: Approximately 6.45 g/cm ³, lighter than stainless steel
(3) Moderate conductivity and thermal conductivity; Suitable for making temperature control sensing sleeves
(4) Processing limitations: It is difficult to weld at room temperature, and the difficulty of conventional cutting is higher than that of stainless steel
5、 Common shortcomings of nickel titanium alloy pipes (must be understood when purchasing)
(1) The price is much higher than that of stainless steel and pure titanium pipes;
(2)Dimensional accuracy and wall thickness uniformity make it difficult to carry out drawing processing, and the threshold for thin-walled pipes (<0.1mm) is very high;
(3)Very sensitive to heat treatment, improper processing can result in loss of superelasticity/memory performance;
(4)Long term high temperature (>400 ℃) can damage memory performance;
(5)There is a risk of trace nickel precipitation, and high-quality surface polishing is required for implanted products.
6、 Simple differentiation of application scenarios
Super elastic tubing: catheter, sheath, elastic support tube, endoscope accessories (used at room temperature, relying on rebound)
Shape memory tubing: self expanding bracket, memory anchoring structure, temperature controlled driving element (relying on heating to restore shape)
