Nickel titanium alloy braided rope is a high-performance flexible rope made by weaving nickel titanium alloy filaments into a specific structure. Its core value lies in its ability to simultaneously possess shape memory/superelasticity and high flexibility. It is mainly aimed at high-end application fields such as medical implants and aerospace, and has specialized industry standards for regulation.


1、 Structure and specifications

Nickel titanium alloy braided rope is not simply twisted, but has strict structural classification. According to pharmaceutical industry standards, common structures include:

  • 1 × 3 structure: composed of 3 twisted wires, with a diameter range typically between 0.12mm and 0.6mm.

  • 1 × 7 structure: composed of 7 twisted wires with a diameter range of 0.18mm to 4.0mm.

  • 1 × 19 structure: composed of 19 twisted wires with a diameter range of 0.60mm to 4.0mm.

In order to achieve more precise performance, special weaving techniques are also used, such as using 144 spindles to weave nickel titanium wires with a diameter of only 0.035 millimeters into medical products.

2、 Core Features and Requirements

As a medical and high-end engineering material, its performance has hard indicators. According to the industry standard YY/T 1924-2025 "Surgical Implant Nickel Titanium Shape Memory Alloy Rope Material", its key requirements are as follows:

  • Chemical composition: The nickel content should be strictly controlled within the range of its nominal composition (mass fraction) of 54.5% to 57.0%, with the rest mainly being titanium.

  • Mechanical properties: The tensile strength requirement under standard conditions is ≥ 1000MPa, elongation ≥ 10%, and the ability to exhibit superelasticity. The residual strain after unloading should be ≤ 0.5%.

  • Appearance and Craftsmanship: Weaving must be uniform, tight, straight, and not loose, and no protruding, broken, or tangled threads are allowed.


3、 Main application areas

Based on its unique properties, nickel titanium alloy braided ropes are mainly used in the following scenarios:

  • High end medical equipment: This is the most core application area. Pengchengrui in Huizhou produces nickel titanium alloy braided ropes, which are used to make precision implants or surgical instruments such as orthopedic thread guides, cables, grippers, grasping rings, mesh baskets, and guide ropes. For example, it can be woven into a vascular stent with sufficient radial support and good axial flexibility.

  • Aerospace and Ocean Engineering: With its high strength and super elasticity, it is also used to manufacture special ropes that can withstand extreme loads, such as for spacecraft return capsule recovery and rescue, deep-sea submersible safety protection, etc.


4、 Manufacturing and Technology

High quality nickel titanium ropes rely on advanced weaving equipment and processes. For example, giant weaving machines up to 10 meters in height are used in the production process to produce special ropes with a breaking force of 2000 tons. Precise weaving techniques and subsequent heat treatment processes are key to ensuring its final performance.
