The bending of nickel titanium wire requires the selection of appropriate methods based on its characteristics and specific usage requirements. The following are some common bending methods and steps:

Cold bending method

Preparation tools: Sharp nose pliers, pipe benders, and other tools need to be prepared. If there are precise requirements for the bending angle and shape, auxiliary tools such as angle measuring instruments may also be needed.

Marking the bending position: According to the design requirements, use a marker or other suitable method to mark the position and angle that needs to be bent on the nickel titanium wire.

Bending: Use pointed nose pliers or pipe benders to clamp the marked position of the nickel titanium wire, slowly and evenly apply external force, and bend it according to the desired angle and shape. Due to the elasticity of nickel titanium wire, it is important to control the force when bending to avoid excessive bending that may cause rebound or breakage. For some complex shapes, multiple gradual bends may be required to achieve.

Hot bending method

Heating equipment: Prepare heating furnaces, spray guns, and other heating equipment. Heating furnaces can be used for batch processing or situations that require high temperature control, while spray guns are more suitable for local heating and bending of small workpieces.

Preheat nickel titanium wire: Place the nickel titanium wire in a heating device and slowly heat it to the appropriate temperature. Generally speaking, the hot bending temperature of nickel titanium wire is around 400-600 ℃, but the specific temperature needs to be adjusted according to factors such as the composition and diameter of the nickel titanium wire. Temperature measurement devices such as thermocouples can be used to accurately monitor and control temperature.

Bending operation: When the nickel titanium wire reaches the predetermined temperature, quickly remove it and place it on the bending mold or workbench, and use specialized bending tools to bend it according to the design requirements. Due to the good plasticity of nickel titanium wire in the hot state, the bending process is relatively easy, but attention should also be paid to the fast operation speed to avoid the nickel titanium wire cooling too quickly in the air and affecting the bending effect. After bending is completed, allow the nickel titanium wire to cool naturally or perform rapid cooling (such as water cooling) as needed to fix its shape.

Bending using shape memory characteristics

Shape setting: First, make the corresponding mold or fixture according to the required bending shape. The shape of the mold should be consistent with the final desired shape of the nickel titanium wire.

Heating and shaping: Place the nickel titanium wire into the mold and then heat it. The heating temperature is usually higher than the phase transition temperature of the nickel titanium wire (usually above 80-100 ℃, depending on the composition and processing technology of the nickel titanium wire). During the heating process, the nickel titanium wire will gradually return to its predetermined shape, which is the shape of the mold. Maintain for a period of time (such as a few minutes to several tens of minutes) to allow the nickel titanium wire to fully shape in that shape.

Cooling and removal: After the shaping is completed, cool the nickel titanium wire together with the mold to room temperature, and then remove it from the mold. At this point, the nickel titanium wire will remain in the bent shape set by the mold. This method utilizes the shape memory effect of nickel titanium wire, which can accurately obtain the desired bending shape, especially suitable for some complex and high-precision shape requirements.

When bending nickel titanium wire, the following precautions should also be taken:

-Before bending, ensure that the surface of the nickel titanium wire is clean, free of oil stains, impurities, etc., to avoid affecting the bending process and product quality.

-For nickel titanium wires with different diameters and compositions, the difficulty of bending and the required process parameters may vary, and it is necessary to determine the optimal bending method and parameters through experiments.

-During the bending process, attention should be paid to safety to avoid burns (hot bending method) and injuries caused by nickel titanium wire rebound.

-After bending, the nickel titanium wire can be surface treated as needed, such as cleaning, polishing, etc., to improve its appearance quality and corrosion resistance.
