The service life of nickel titanium alloy steel wire rope is affected by various factors, and it is difficult to give an exact time. Here are some of the main influencing factors:
1、 Usage environment
(1) Temperature: If used in high temperature environments, it may affect the performance of nickel titanium alloys, accelerate material aging and fatigue, and shorten their service life. For example, when exceeding its Curie temperature (usually ranging from tens to hundreds of degrees Celsius, with different compositions of nickel titanium alloys having different Curie temperatures), the shape memory effect and other characteristics of nickel titanium alloys may change, leading to changes in the mechanical properties of steel wire ropes. In low-temperature environments, although nickel titanium alloys can still maintain good toughness, if the temperature is too low, the material may become brittle and increase the risk of fracture.
(2) Humidity: A humid environment can easily cause rusting of steel wire ropes. Even though nickel titanium alloys have certain corrosion resistance, long-term exposure to high humidity or corrosive media will gradually lead to corrosion, thereby reducing the strength and service life of steel wire ropes. If used in humid environments rich in salt such as marine environments, the corrosion rate will be faster.
(3) Chemical substances: Contact with acids, bases, salts and other chemical substances can cause chemical reactions with nickel titanium alloys, resulting in corrosion, erosion and other damage, seriously affecting their service life. For example, in the chemical production environment, if the steel wire rope frequently comes into contact with corrosive chemical raw materials or products, its surface will gradually corrode and its internal structure will also be damaged.
2、 Usage frequency and load
(1) Usage frequency: Nickel titanium alloy steel wire rope that is frequently used will accelerate the fatigue damage of the material due to continuous tension, bending and other forces. For example, on some industrial production lines, steel wire ropes require frequent lifting, traction, and other operations, and their fatigue accumulation speed will be much faster than that of low frequency use, and their service life will be correspondingly shortened.
(2) Load size: If the load borne exceeds the rated bearing capacity of the nickel titanium alloy steel wire rope, it will cause irreparable damage to it, and even serious problems such as fracture may occur in a short period of time. Even within the rated load range, long-term use close to the ultimate load will significantly shorten its service life. For example, when used for hoisting large components in construction, if the steel wire rope is often kept in a fully loaded or overloaded state, it will greatly reduce its safe use period.
3、 Maintenance and upkeep status
(1) Regular inspection: Regularly inspecting the steel wire rope can detect wear, deformation, corrosion and other issues in a timely manner, so that corresponding measures can be taken, such as replacing damaged parts or the entire steel wire rope, to avoid further deterioration of the problem and extend its service life. For example, through regular non-destructive testing, minor damage inside the steel wire rope can be detected and treated before it develops into a serious malfunction.
(2) Lubrication and maintenance: Proper lubrication can reduce the friction between the steel wires inside the steel wire rope and between the steel wire rope and the contact parts such as pulleys, thereby reducing the degree of wear. Regularly applying a suitable lubricant can form a protective film on the surface of the steel wire, preventing corrosion, and also making the steel wire rope more uniform under stress, extending its service life.
If used under normal conditions, with a mild environment, reasonable frequency and load, and good maintenance, nickel titanium alloy steel wire rope can be used for several years or even more than ten years. But if the usage conditions are harsh and there is a lack of necessary maintenance, its service life may be greatly shortened, and it may need to be replaced in a few months.
